Evoking Sound Choral Series - James Jordan, Executive Editor

Songs of the Questioner

Songs of the Questioner received its world premier in April, 2015, performed by the combined forces of Westminster Williamson Voices and the University of Aberdeen Chamber Choir in Princeton, New Jersey, conducted by the legendary James Jordan. This expansive, eighteen minute work brings us down the path that each of us takes as we recede into our minds to question important aspects of life, love, and faith. The work is dedicated to all participants of the second Choral Music Institute at Oxford, during which much of the music was composed.

Lux aeterna

A Child's Requiem, with a libretto written by my mother, poet Esther Margaret Ayers, seeks to posthumously elevate the dead out of the context of the Italian Hall disaster; to celebrate them as they were in life and death and not as a statistic used to apportion blame. Lux aeterna is the flagship movement of the work, a supplication to God to grant eternal rest and light to the deceased children forevermore. This arrangement for chorus and piano, dedicated to Jim Hansen, my first mentor in composition, has become a standard in the repertoire of the Marquette Senior High School choirs conducted by Jan Brodersen. Without their tireless dedication the world premiere of A Child's Requiem would not have been possible, and for this I am eternally grateful.

Alleluia

As I Walk the Silent Earth

As I Walk the Silent Earth is dedicated to James Jordan and the members of Westminster Williamson Voices. From 2011 to 2013, I had the great honor and privilege to hold a seat in this choir amongst some of the finest musicians I have ever worked with. Throughout that time I developed a strong sense of friendship and comradery with each member of the ensemble, as well as a profound respect for the individual talents they possessed and for the legacy of the choir as a whole. This legacy has flourished under the guidance of James Jordan, whose leadership and devotion - not only to the world of choral music but the the well-being of each and every student who comes under his wing - have been an incredible source of inspiration for many.

The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Alleluia was composed in honor of Jan Brodersen, director of the Marquette Senior High School choral department in Marquette, Michigan. She was, and always will be, one of the greatest mentors in my life. Without her guidance I would not have developed into the musician and composer that I am today, nor would I have fully discovered my love for choral music. She was with me for many of life's challenges, and I will always be thankful for her presence in my life.

I composed The Lake Isle of Innisfree during the first ever Choral Music Institute at Oxford in July of 2013. This incredible new program, which takes place in the halls of St. Stephen's House at Oxford University, is a truly remarkable and beneficial experience for conductors and singers alike. Conductors who enroll in the program work closely with the GRAMMY nominated Westminster Williamson Voices, honing their craft with one of the finest choral ensembles from the United States.

Salvator mundi

Salvator mundi was commissioned by the Pennsbury High School Choirs (James D. Moyer, conductor) for their tour of Germany and Austria. It was premiered by the Pennsbury High School Touring Choir and Amici Musicae (Ron-Dirk Entleutner, conductor) at the famed Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany in a program that featured works by Felix Mendelssohn and Leonard Bernstein.
